There's a wide range of helpful household gadgets, aids and equipment  that can help you to keep living in your own home.

If you have a disability, visual impairment, are hard of hearing or just need a little extra help with everyday tasks, there's something out there that can help you.

Assistive technology| (visit the Ask Sara website) can cover a wide range of equipment from very simple ‘low - tech’ items such as calendar clocks to more ‘high - tech’ items such as sensors that can detect accidents or emergencies in the home, and call for help.

Daily living equipment includes:

  • 'adapted' cutlery  to help people to eat meals,
  • dressing aids such as gadgets to help with zippers or stockings,
  • household aids such as trolleys and gadgets to help pick up things from the floor.

There's also specific aids and equipment to help:

  • in the bathroom
  • in the bedroom
  • with walking

You can browse and buy helpful household gizmos and gadgets on the Ask TARA website.

Your advice

Ellen from Cannock

Ellen has difficulty walking due to arthritis.

“Due to my arthritis I was having trouble getting up and down stairs. I was also worried about falling.

Using the information I found through the Staffordshire Cares website, I was able to get a stair lift fitted and can now easily go up and down the stairs as often as I want to.

I feel safer and happier now, especially as I can stay in my own home. I would recommend everyone to just have a look around the site to find out who can help them."
